Choose colours for readable interfaces
Build a usable colour palette by checking contrast, state differences and real viewing conditions.

Start with readability
Use the colour tools to explore values and combinations, then test them in the interface where they will appear. A visually pleasing palette can still make small text difficult to read.
- Choose a background and primary text colour.
- Measure contrast for text and important controls.
- Check hover, focus, selected, disabled and error states.
- Test at small sizes and under different display conditions.
Do not rely on colour alone
Pair status colours with clear labels or symbols. Distinguish links in a way that remains visible without perfect colour perception. Test keyboard focus and dark-mode variants. A palette preview alone is not an accessibility audit or proof that an entire website meets a standard.
